Guernsey 7 Old Albanian 38

Elliott McPhun scored two tries for the second week running as Old Albanian romped to a bonus point win in the Channel Islands. Unlike last week where his brace came in a losing effort against Leicester Lions, the scrum half’s achievements were part of a display which saw OAs dominate every facet of the match.

Prop Matt Ramzanpour, backs Dan Watt and Jarryd Sage and Number Eight Chris West all got on the scoresheet in the six try rout to keep their club within six points of Redruth at the top of the league rankings.

Tight efforts at scrum and lineout, superbly led by marauding lock Ashley Ilston meant the only surprise was it took the visitors 24 minutes to trouble the scorer, Ramzanpour credited with having the crucial hand on the ball at the bottom of a pile of bodies.

McPhun’s fiirst of the day followed eight minutes later and fly half Watt converted before himself diving over soon after to make it 0-17 at the break.

The hosts looked more solid after the interval and threatened a fightback when on 64 minutes they were awarded a penalty try following a succession of infringements. However with replacement Harry Samuel showing up well, McPhun’s second try settled matters and West claimed another for the forwards.

The backs had the last word when inside centre Sage charged over in the final act of the day.

Head Coach, Dan George, was delighted with the way his side had ‘gelled’ after such an early start to the day, especially considering their opponents have had such a good start to the season. ‘Just six points separate the top six in the League and if we can maintain today’s level of precision and consistency, combined with the judicious application of ‘grunt’ and urgency we can look forward to a very Happy New Year’

However Barnes also have enjoyed success this year and will prove testing opponents next Saturday.
