On Sunday 12 May OA U13s hosted “Seven hours of 7’s” at Woollams and raised over £15,000 for Cancer Research UK.
Event organiser Stephanie Wells said “a massive thanks to all turned out last weekend for ‘Seven Hours of 7’s’ to raise money for Cancer Research UK, the day wouldn’t have been a success without all of you.”
There was a great turnout from the OA U13 coaches, parents, siblings and players which made up the core of the players involved. Friends from the other OA Mini and Junior age groups, were also there to show their support. A special thank you to the U18’s for a demonstration of how touch rugby should be played. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the Mum’s game, referee Julian Skeels commented “that was one of the most undisciplined games of rugby he had ever seen.”
Numerous different teams formed to play touch rugby for over the seven hours which were relatively injury free; although OA U13’s first aider Adam Lach-Szymra bruised his hand catching the ball !
OA U13 coach Andy Reid who had the initial idea for the event said, he was “delighted that so many former U13 players and their families turned up to get involved and raise money for a fabulous charity which does such important work.”
Over 150 people joined the fun in glorious conditions and after a long day in the sun, event organiser Stephanie Wells stated “the day couldn’t have gone better and many of the mum’s have a new found respect for the amount of work their son’s put in on a Sunday morning.”
The OAs U13s are grateful to everyone who supported this event and look forward to holding a similar event at the end of next season. They would like to thank Ian Tomlins Junior Chairman at OA Rugby and Tim Bonnett Director of Age Grade Rugby at Hertfordshire RFU for helping to facilitate the day.
