Great teamwork and running rugby was the recipe for success in the first U13s away fixture.
The match was very even in the first five minutes with OAs pinned back in their own half, and both teams unable to retain the ball for any length of time. The OAs defence held out as they managed to repel a number of mini breaks by the Tabard team. Charlie Brunt and Oscar de Jong put in great tackles when it looked like the Tabard runners were though.
Following some good forward work by Tariq, Alex and James Coleman the ball came back to Harry Pope who managed a mini break of his own before passing the ball out to Ruben Horner who danced down the left wing into the Tabard half and although he was eventually stopped he managed an inside pass to Charlie who raced through for the first try of the game.
Two minutes later the OAs pack were back close to the Tabard line again. Fergus Reid picked up the ball from a clearing kick and having made some good ground he passed the ball out to the right wing where Oli See was able to step the last defenders and score the second try.
Max Lack scored a third in the first half with a strong run from mid field following a clever pass by Daniel Edworthy.
The second half started very positively for OAs as they managed to turn over the ball in the Tabard half get it to Henry Sandwell who charged though a crowd of opposition tacklers to make the make the score 4-0.
The OAs teamwork was now really showing and following four phases of play Ruben Horner scored the fifth OA try before Tabard hit back with a flowing try of their own from inside their own half.
Then followed an entertaining incident as all knew the match was won, Charlie passed the ball to a teammate when he was already over the Tabard try line in an attempt to spread the tries around the team. This unfortunately resulted in a knocked on and an opposition scrum, however the OAs were soon back on track when a final try of the contest was scored by Max with another fast and direct run from just outside the Tabard 22 yard line.
The full team was Tariq El-Jumaily, James Carruthers, Charlie Brunt, James Coleman, Oscar de Jong, Daniel Edworthy, Max Lach-Szyrma, Hugo Laing, Alexander Osman, Harry Pope, Fergus Reid, Henry Sandwell, Oliver See, Ruben Horner
The coaches were Phil Brunt and Andy Reid and the match was expertly reffed by Nick Coleman
After match pasta and chips were enjoyed by all.
