Hammersmith & Fulham
A warm and sunny Woollams welcomed Hammersmith & Fulham Ladies for what was sure to be a tough physical encounter, both teams had won their opening fixture the week before.
The game started with Hammersmith on the front foot for large periods, but some physical defence by Saints kept them at bay, until they found a gap and exploited the lapse to score the first points of the match, well converted 0 – 7 Hammersmith.
This fired up the home side who started to find some rhythm and string phases together, after some good link play by the forwards, the ball worked its way to McKenna via some slick hands for a great team try, extras missed 5 – 7 Hammersmith.
The remainder of the half saw both teams create change, although not able to find the crucial last pass or decision to change the scoreboard, with the half coming to an end the visitors again touched down for an unconverted try 5 – 12 Hammersmith led at the break.
The second half continued in much the same as the first with both teams pressing for points, but unable to make the final part count. Hammersmith found another 5% of energy and went over for two more converted tries 5 – 26 Hammersmith.
Ten to fifteen minutes remained when the tables turned and Saints found some good continuity and space for Finn to score, extras missed 10 – 26 Hammersmith
Straight from the restart Saints scored again through Finn after a strong break by Drummond, converted by Abumarzouq.
Head Coach Brown Said “Although we are disappointed to lose any game, credit to Hammersmith they put us under a lot of pressure and we didn’t sustain our plan or put pressure on them for long enough periods, some of our skills sets were positive, new players are starting to gel, new systems are being developed, so we can’t be too hard on ourselves, the positives are starting to outweigh the negatives, so the coaching staff and I are happy with the direction we are going, the next two weeks will be on developing these further”.
